Athleisure: unexpected yet effortless
by Adrianna Bohrer
Investing in high quality workout clothes is a great way to stay motivated to hit the gym regularly and feel good while you're running, jumping, and squatting your way to better health. However, high quality can sometimes mean higher prices, and it's hard to justify spending money on clothes you only wear one hour at a time. Fortunately, the latest fashion craze of athleisure wear perfectly blends fitness clothing into street style worthy ensembles to help you get your money's worth. While your paint-splattered neon print pants may be better suited for the gym, there are a few simple ways to get in on this athleisure wear trend with workout clothes you probably already have hanging in your closet.
The first way to incorporate the athleisure trend into your weekly outfit rotation is with the foolproof pairing of an athletic quarter-zip top and your favorite pair of denim. Typically worn as a jacket or tied around your waist during a workout, the transitional quarter zip serves double duty when paired with some fun sneakers and a few key accessories. You'll want to pick a top with a slightly oversized fit to keep the look effortless and relaxed. The first way to achieve this look is to pair your quarter zip with denim capris and your favorite pair of sneakers. A pair of denim capris that hit somewhere from mid-calf to right above the anklebone is best because it helps elongate the leg and counteract the look of a chunky sneaker. Complete the on-the-go, effortless vibe by adding a patterned scarf, such as the white plaid one pictured. A plaid scarf brings some much-needed dimension to the outfit and takes it from soccer mom to street chic in one simple move.
Another way to achieve this athleisure wear look is to pair your quarter zip with distressed denim and a baseball hat. When it comes to athleisure wear, an unexpected yet effortless combination is what makes all the difference. A lighter-washed distressed denim and faded baseball hat complement a lighter-colored quarter zip, such as the grey one pictured, while throwing on a pair of boat shoes in the same color palette provides the unexpected detail that takes the outfit from forgettable to fab. The previous pairing of plaid scarf and sneakers is another example of an unexpected yet effortless combination.
The second way to incorporate the athleisure wear trend into your everyday wardrobe is to seamlessly transition your workout outfit to carry you from sweat sesh to grocery run. By simply adding a jacket and switching out your shoes, you can extend your workout clothes beyond the gym and be ready for whatever the day holds. A striped grey long-sleeve tee and black capris are perfect for spin class, but throw on a complementary olive jacket and switch out those trainers for a fresh pair of converse and you're ready for a casual lunch date or running errands around town. Blush pink and other pastel colors exude a springtime essence that work just as well for counting reps at the gym as they do for a causal weekend barbeque. After you squeeze in that morning workout, throw on a denim jacket and some neutral sneakers and you're ready to go. An oversized tote in the same shade of pink brings the whole look together and is the perfect companion for an active lifestyle.
Incorporating some athleisure wear into your weekly outfit rotation is the perfect way to refresh your spring style. It may even motivate you to sign up for a new class at the gym or commit to that evening walk with your dogs! Either way, you'll be right on trend and rocking that laid-back, effortless look in no time.
