If you believe the trope, women love Valentine's Day and men dread it. Typically, men are tasked with planning Valentine's Day. We asked men from Bismarck-Mandan what their ideal date would be if the roles were reversed and their significant other was doing the planning.

What is your ideal date for Valentine's Day?

I had a lot of fun when (my wife and I) went to see Jerry Seinfeld. We had a lot of fun. (She) planned that for my birthday. That was pretty cool.

Any type of big event -- I'd love to go out for dinner. That's me; I'm kind of a downtown person. I like that sort of thing -- big event, concert, dinner, hotel in downtown is cool.

What was your most disastrous Valentine's Day?

I did have a girlfriend in college that gave me a gift that she spent time making. She was kind of hyping it up. "I spent a lot of time making this for you." What she had done is gone to Wal Mart and purchased fabric that had Marvel superheroes on it, and stitched me two different pillow cases.

When your girlfriend gives you this gift and says, "I spent a lot of time making it," and gives you Marvel superheroes pillow cases, you're kind of like, "Awesome... thank you? What am I supposed to do with this? Thanks a lot." It was pretty weird.

What was your most successful Valentine's Day?

Probably one of the better ones was when I visited my (then-girlfriend, now-wife) in Minneapolis... This was our first year when we were dating. We were dating long-distance. I was in southeast Iowa and she was up in the Twin Cities.

So, I drove 5 hours up to see her. We got to hang out and went for a nice dinner in what was called FireLake in downtown Minneapolis. That was really good.

Then, we probably went walking around to bars and stuff like that afterwards downtown. I got to spend the whole weekend with [her].

What is your ideal date for Valentine's Day?

I enjoy being outdoors, so my ideal date would probably be ice skating followed by dinner and a movie. If Valentine's Day fell on a warmer month, I would say golfing or hiking, but our options are limited in February.

What was your most disastrous Valentine's Day?

Not sure if I've ever had a disastrous Valentine's Day, but my fiancée may have a different opinion...

What was your most successful Valentine's Day?

None really stand out to me, but it seems like the simpler the better. Chocolates, dinner -- with wine of course -- and a movie seem to work well with my significant other.

What is your ideal date for Valentine's Day?

Is money an object? Or is it not an object? Well in that case, my Valentine 's Day just got a lot better.

I think the ideal date for my Valentine's day would be a surprise trip to go diving in Florida. I like to dive, and she likes to go to Florida, so that would be a great trip.

What was your most disastrous Valentine's Day?

This wasn't exactly Valentine's Day, but I did try the surprise cruise trip, and I booked the wrong boat. And so we have agreed I will not try that surprise again.

We were going in the middle of March, which was after Valentine's Day but before our anniversary. It was kind of in between. I did not realize or know that Spring Break started that early. So the boat we got on had 2,300 Spring Breakers, and the boat only held 2,800 people.

We had a Spring Break cruise with thousands of college kids, and it was a long cruise.

What is your ideal date for Valentine's Day?

I would love to have my wife arrange for childcare and take me out to dinner. We have two kids, and I can't remember when she and I went out on a date.

What was your most disastrous Valentine's Day?

My most disastrous Valentine's Days are the ones when I forgot to celebrate it, and my wife has to remind me what day it is.

What was your most successful Valentine's Day?

The day I asked my wife to marry me.

What is your ideal date for Valentine's Day?

I think for a young professional with a young family, the ideal date would be a planned outing with only your significant other. I think people with careers and families get so involved with work and children that they often forget to spend the needed time to reconnect with their significant others.

What was your most disastrous Valentine's Day?

I think it's the time we didn't prepare plans ahead of time and just stayed home with the kids. We didn't take advantage of an opportunity to take the time for ourselves.

What was your most successful Valentine's Day?

Although most people think of their first ones together, I think the success grows each year you've been together. This is because as the years progress you start doing all the little things they appreciate in addition to the yearly surprises to make each year better.
